Overview & Our Approach to Uveitis

Uveitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the uvea, the middle layer of the eye, which consists of the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. This condition can cause significant discomfort and, if left untreated, can lead to serious complications such as glaucoma, cataracts, and even permanent vision loss. Uveitis can affect one or both eyes and can develop suddenly or gradually over time. It may recur periodically or become a chronic issue.
The causes of uveitis are diverse, ranging from infections to autoimmune disorders, and in some cases, the exact cause remains unknown. Symptoms typically include eye redness, pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, and floaters. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent long-term damage to the eye.

Our approach to treating uveitis focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying cause of inflammation, managing symptoms, and preserving vision:

  • Reducing Inflammation: We utilize a combination of corticosteroids, immunosuppressive medications, and other anti-inflammatory treatments to reduce inflammation and prevent damage to the eye.
  • Protecting Eye Health: In addition to addressing the acute inflammation, our treatments focus on protecting the overall health of the eye, preventing complications such as glaucoma or cataracts.
  • Telehealth & In-Office Treatments: We offer personalized care through both telehealth consultations and in-office visits at our New Jersey location. This approach ensures that each patient receives the most effective treatments tailored to their condition.
  • At-Home Care with ACS3000: For continuous management, we provide the ACS3000 system, which supports ocular health and helps reduce the recurrence of uveitis through consistent at-home care.
  • Targeted SupplementsOur specially formulated supplements are designed to support the immune system and reduce inflammation, helping to protect the eyes from further damage.

Symptoms & Causes of Uveitis

Dr-Andy-Rosenfarb-Uveitis

Uveitis Overview:

  • Eye Redness and Pain: One of the most common symptoms of uveitis is redness of the eye, often accompanied by pain or discomfort. This pain can range from mild to severe and may worsen with light exposure.
  • Light Sensitivity (Photophobia): Patients with uveitis often experience sensitivity to light, which can make it difficult to be in bright environments. This symptom is due to the inflammation affecting the iris and ciliary body, which are responsible for controlling the amount of light entering the eye.
  • Blurred Vision: Inflammation in the uvea can lead to blurred or cloudy vision, making it difficult to focus on objects. This can significantly impact daily activities, especially those requiring clear vision.
  • Floaters: Patients may notice floaters—small, dark shapes that drift across the field of vision. These are caused by inflammation in the vitreous humor, the gel-like substance inside the eye.

Causes of Uveitis:

  • Autoimmune Disorders: Uveitis is often associated with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, and sarcoidosis. In these conditions, the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues of the eye, leading to inflammation.
  • Infections: Certain infections can trigger uveitis, including viral infections like herpes simplex, bacterial infections like tuberculosis or syphilis, and parasitic infections like toxoplasmosis. Prompt treatment of the underlying infection is crucial to resolving uveitis.
  • Trauma: Physical injury to the eye can lead to uveitis. Trauma-induced uveitis may develop immediately after the injury or weeks to months later as a delayed response.
  • Toxins: Exposure to certain toxins and chemicals can cause inflammation of the uvea, leading to uveitis. This is particularly relevant in cases where the eyes have been exposed to harmful substances without proper protection.
  • Idiopathic Causes: In some cases, the exact cause of uveitis remains unknown (idiopathic). Even without a known cause, treatment focuses on reducing inflammation and preventing complications.
